A visionary East-meets-West re-interpretation of Monteverdi’s masterpiece
Japan Orfeo intends to present Monteverdi’s fable in music to a vast international audience. This masterpiece is universally considered the ‘mother’ of all operas, both for its dramatic structure and for its employment of the forms so familiar to opera lovers such as arias, duets and choruses.
It is unique in its kind employing highly specialized musicians chosen amongst the best in the Italian baroque tradition together with Japanese traditional performing artists.
The choice of Monteverdi’s Orfeo, whose story is derived from the classical Greek myth, pays homage to the Japanese myth of Izanami and Izanagi as described in the Kojiki (712. The existing first-written-record of Japan).
The music of Orfeo was composed in 1607 by Claudio Monteverdi and the libretto was written by Alessandro Striggio. The Fifth Act, originally without music, will be composed by the Japanese composer, Ryusuke Numajiri, and the subtle profound beauty of the Kingdom of the Dead will be performed by one of the oldest extant theatrical forms in the world, the UNESCO designated intangible cultural heritage Japanese Noh Theatre, Kazufusa Hosho XX, Grand Master of the Hosho School of Noh.
The world premiere of Japan Orfeo will take place at the Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine in Kamakura, one of Japan’s most venerated and spiritually sacred sites.
